Yukon government and First Nation agree on notice about mineral exploration

WHITEHORSE-The Yukon government and Tr’ondek Hwech’in First Nation in Dawson City have reached an agreement on mineral exploration on the First Nation’s lands.

The pact heads off legal action launched by the First Nation last June, as it fought for notification and consultation about any type of mineral exploration on all its territories, including non-settlement lands.

A consent order filed in Yukon Supreme Court earlier this month confirms that exploration on non-settlement lands will be added to the notification and consultation requirements.

The order, outlined in a joint news release from the First Nation and territorial government, takes effect next February.

Tr’ondek Hwech’in Chief Roberta Joseph has issued a statement saying the First Nation is pleased an agreement was reached without court intervention.

The two sides have also signed a memorandum of understanding committing both governments to working together, and with other Yukon First Nations, to resolve other mining-related issues. (CKRW)
